Brief History of Don Bosco Technical Institute (DBTI)

Background and Mission:

Established in October 2010, the Don Bosco Technical Institute (DBTI) was founded by BSVS (Bosco Samajik Vikas Sanstha) to address the pressing issues of unemployment and underemployment among rural tribal youth in the Jawhar and Mokhada Talukas of Maharashtra, India. Recognizing the socio-economic challenges faced by these communities—high dropout rates, lack of access to vocational training, and exploitative labor practices—BSVS committed itself to empowering young individuals through skill development and training.

Challenges Faced by Youth:

Before the establishment of DBTI, many local youths migrated to cities or coastal areas in search of work, often falling prey to exploitation. They were offered advances by employers in high-risk jobs such as brick making, sand mining, and fishing, leading to hazardous working conditions and minimal wages. This cycle of exploitation highlighted the urgent need for alternative employment opportunities.

Training Programs:

DBTI focuses on providing short-term, non-formal technical courses ranging from one to six months in various fields, including Welding, Mechanics, Electrical work, BPO, Retail, and Hospitality. The training not only imparts technical skills but also emphasizes employability skills, life skills, and personal growth, including English language training and computer education. Graduates receive government-recognized certificates, enhancing their job prospects.

Impact and Achievements:

Since its inception, DBTI has trained approximately 1,500 youths, helping them secure meaningful employment or start their businesses, thereby fostering economic independence and dignity. The institute offers subsidized boarding and lodging, along with a commitment to 100% job placements, with many graduates finding employment in reputable companies across various sectors.

Skill Development Center:

To further enhance its capacity to train local youth, the Skill Development Center was inaugurated on October 24, 2011. This center represents BSVS's ongoing dedication to skill development, focusing on vocational skills that promote self-reliance and sustainable livelihoods for the marginalized communities in the region.

Through its initiatives, DBTI strive to transform the lives of young individuals, providing them with the tools and opportunities needed to build a brighter future.
